Depending on the sport your child plays, they might wear a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, or even shin guards. However, have you ever thought about how to protect your kid’s mouth during sports? If your child plays sports, our Katy dentist may recommend a mouthguard to help protect their smile from damage.

Your Katy dentist may recommend an athletic mouthguard for many types of sports.

Sports are a great pastime for kids and teens of all ages. However, they can also do a number on your teeth and mouth if you’re not careful. That’s why our Katy dentist may recommend getting a sports mouthguard for your child.

Properly fitted sports mouthguards can protect your child in many ways. They cushion any impact to their face that could cause injuries to the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, and teeth. Some common sports-related tooth injuries include tooth fractures, tooth loss, and tooth displacement. In some cases, these injuries can be permanent.

While many sports organizations don’t require mouthguard use, maxillofacial injuries (injuries to the jaw, face, mouth, and teeth) account for between 10% and 20% of sports-related injuries in children.

Some sports that the American Dental Association recommends mouthguards for include:

    • Football
    • Basketball
    • Soccer
    • Hockey
    • Lacrosse
    • Baseball
    • Softball
    • Boxing
    • Wrestling
    • Martial arts
    • Gymnastics
    • Skateboarding
    • Volleyball
    • Weightlifting

Therefore, if your child is in sports, talk to your Katy pediatric dentist about whether they need a mouthguard to protect their teeth and mouth from injury.

Where to Get a Sports Mouthguard for Your Child

If your child needs an athletic mouthguard, our Katy dentist can help you determine which type to get and learn how it should fit on your child’s mouth. However, here is some general information to help parents protect their young athlete’s teeth.

There are three basic types of sports mouthguards, including:

    • Custom Mouthguards: Custom mouthguards are made especially for your child’s teeth. These are often the best for fit and protection, as they are professionally molded and created specifically for your child.
    • Boil and Bite: Boil and bite mouthguards are a slightly lower-cost option for a sports mouthguard. With these, you boil the mouthguard to heat it up and then have your child bite on the material to mold it to your child’s mouth. These may not fit as well as custom mouthguards, but can help protect your child’s teeth during contact sports.
    • Ready-Made: Ready-made mouthguards, also known as stock mouthguards, offer no customization. Instead, you wear it as-is. While this is the lowest-cost option, these also often don’t fit very well, as everyone’s mouth is different.

Whichever option you choose, it’s essential to check the fit of the mouthguard. For children, you’ll need to repeat this regularly as they’re still growing. Here are some general guidelines on sports mouthguard fit:

    • The mouthguard should cover the teeth and part of the gums
    • Mouthguards should stay in place without the need to bite or clench the teeth
    • They shouldn’t interfere with breathing or speech

If you’re in doubt, bring the mouthguard into your Katy dentist and our team can check it for you.
